blog post #5

Propaganda. We’ve all seen it, I’m sure. But have we ever considered what it actually means? A reference to here, might help!

For this activity, I chose propaganda as a topic, because #1 – it’s very interesting to see what kind of techniques people decide to use, and #2 – propaganda will never go away!

Those who view my posts and blogs are usually younger, so that’s where my intended audience will lead. Younger generations are incredibly exposed to this type of stuff, i.e. Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, X, etc. Whether that’s through a political advertisement or through memes like the one below (meme made during corona virus), propaganda is everywhere folks! As Professor David Welch explains, “Propaganda is the dissemination of ideas intended to convince people to think and act in a particular way and for a particular purpose.” Nailed it.

Instagram was the easiest platform for me to utilize to get that message out. Who knows how many people will share it and like it! Obviously, my target audience should know how to use Instagram; they know how to use everything. Rather than just a really dull and BORING PowerPoint, I wanted to make an aesthetic and informative impact. Each slide introduces different approach to different techniques. My favorite was glittering generalities and card stacking I have never heard of those terms until my research! I thought they were a very accurate way of describing the effect it has on propaganda. The bandwagon effect is one of the most used techniques because I feel as if people are so easily influenced, especially my target audience! Being so young and impressionable can sway opinions.

I want to emphasize that propaganda is everywhere, every day. It doesn’t have to be obvious, but if you look hard enough, you might find it. The interactive slide might help! I want to encourage you, younger generation, to SLOW down and think about what you read and what you share to others. Be recognizing propaganda, you can help someone else do the same.
